Camellias in a whiskey barrel?

I purchased 2 one gallon camellias and want to put them into two whiskey barrels. Before I do, can you please help me answer these questions:

1. I want to put styrofoam in the bottom of the barrels for lightweight drainage. If I do this, will the styrofoam affect the roots of the camellias? Is this a bad idea? I don't know if camellias have a tap root that needs room to burrow. There will be about 18" of soil on top of the styrofoam for the plant to sit in.

2. I may in the future want to transplant the camellias into the ground. Do they transplant easily? If not I can put them in the ground now and plant something else in the barrels.

3. Can I safely plant annuals around the base of the barrell?

4. Anything else I should know about camellias before planting?

I'm pretty new at this and just want to make sure they grow well! Thanks for any advice you can give me.
