Yard is a mess!

This is my first spring in my new house (Middle TN).

The back yard is horrible. Last fall, it was mainly ground cover. Like, this viney stuff. It looked nice, I thought, and no mowing, so I didn't seed it. But now, with all this rain, and too early in the year for the ground cover to have grown in, it is a complete mess. I have three pairs of shoes that are just caked in mud. And the dogs running in and out... you can imagine.

So, now I am considering seeding the yard, but I'm not sure how to do it. Is it too late in the year to seed? Do I need to aerate? Do I need to cover it in straw?

I've always heard you should seed in the fall, cover it in straw then rake it up the next spring.

The yard is slightly sloped. The ground is extremely rooty. Rooty enough that I cant dig without going at it with a pickaxe first. There is lots of mature tree cover, so it will be shady.
