| Hello! I was wondering if anyone knows of any cure for the awful fungus that plagues Red Tips. We've been in our house for 9 years and have been fighting a battle that my husband will just not give up on. Winter of 2009 he spent over $500 getting them cut way back. Last Summer there were very few leaves on them to begin with and by the end of the Summer most had fallen off. Now it is nearly Spring, and they are bare. Husband refuses to give up on them. I'd like to konk him on the head....
Somebody please tell me if there is any hope! These Red Tips are next to our deck and were intended by previous owner to act as privacy screen. Our deck has constantly been covered with nasty fungus laden leaves for years.

| You know, if plants are an ongoing problem with disease and other problems, sometimes you're better off to cut your losses. I would replace them with cleyera. This year instead of spending $500 MORE to doctor the Red Tips, spend $500 (or less) to have someone dig them out. Seriously, cleyera is just as (I think more) beautiful than Photinias and they are inexpensive to buy and beautiful year round. I only prune mine (7-8 foot hedge) once a year. |

| Thanks donnabaskets! I looked at some photos on that cleyera and it's very attractive! These Red Tips also got way too tall...Cleyera seems more suitable. Hopefully these Red Tips won't present anymore leaves to give my husband "hope". :) Appreciate the advice! |

| The fungus is incurable. Here in Texas very few Red Tip Photenias are being planted because they will die within a few years. Entomosporium leaf spot is the culprit, and I'm sorry to say that your Red Tips are doomed. |
