We have two potted gardenia plants that have been left outside all winter. Last fall the leaves yellowed and fell. I had some other family priorities and could not give them adequate care. I wouldn't even know where to begin to try to get them healthy again... one article I found recommends pruning, but I'm not certain where to cut. Are they beyond rescue?

On a related note, can anyone make any recommendations for plants that would do well, potted, afternoon sun exposure, to flank my front door? Hopefully something less temperamental!
