Gardenia Rescue

We have two potted gardenia plants that have been left outside all winter. Last fall the leaves yellowed and fell. I had some other family priorities and could not give them adequate care. I wouldn't even know where to begin to try to get them healthy again... one article I found recommends pruning, but I'm not certain where to cut. Are they beyond rescue?

On a related note, can anyone make any recommendations for plants that would do well, potted, afternoon sun exposure, to flank my front door? Hopefully something less temperamental!

God luck. I posted a link to the Infamous Suicidal Gardenia thread that haunts those of us who try to make these things succeed. Start reading when you have plenty of time!
