How to cut ponytail palm base without killing it

I have a ponytail palm that I would like to keep, but I made the strategic error of planting it too near to a wall years ago. Now the palm is about 2 inches from the wall and will damage it severely if left alone. The plant is in a spot where it is too difficult to get a bobcat to lift and relocate it. The palm is between 10-12' high. My only option is to see if I could cut the base of the plant to create more space between the plant and the wall.

I'm guessing that I'll have to saw off a chunk of the base to create space, but what can I seal the wound with to keep the plant from dying?
