Cutting back Homestead Verbena

What is everyone's experience with Homestead Verbena. I know it should not be cut back before winter. But should it be cut back now to keep it blooming reliably and/or to keep it from looking so sticky and ratty?

The plant is not listed in Well-Tended Perennial Garden. ... Thanks in advance for your help!

It blooms on it's tips, so trimming is good. Walter Reeves says to "shovel prune" it. Just go around the edge and use your shovel to do your trimming.
