For sure Snapdragons will over winter even up in zone 4. BUT I have not been able to save them here thru the summer. Anyone have any luck with beating the summer heat? In z 8b they are used for winter bloom.

I have always planted them in the fall along with pansies. They make a spectacular fall performance uptill and thru hard freezes just like pansies. Then when it begins to warm again cut them back to clean them up and they will bloom again thru may come june pull them up, they don't like the heat and will die.

As a newbie gardener I planted some last April. They did find until about mid June and then they croaked from the heat. I had a volunteer come up in my whiskey barrel that put on an impressive bloom around mid-March. I'm considering trying them again this fall. After reading about Rodger's sucess I'm really inspired to try them for fall\winter color.

I've always put out snapdragon plants in early Nov or so and then pulled them up after they had bloomed (hot summer)but last year I left one clump - and it started blooming in early April. My fall planted ones just started blooming last week, so this year instead of pulling them up, I will cut them back and just leave for the summer/winter and see what happens.

I planted a whole bunch recently since they were only $.99 for a 4 inch pot and it's been a very cool spring here. I know they probably won't survive the summer heat, but someone said maybe in the shade they would. I'll see....

i planted some last year and did nothing to them and this spring they have really great blooms.they are on the east side of my house and for whatever reason are doing well.

There are species of snapdragons that are reliably perennial.

I have really good luck with the rocket variety. I put them out in the fall, they do not freeze in Texas. I have them planted in zone 9 coastal. This is my favorite plant for the coastal area. They are beautiful from March until July. Then in November I set them out again, I have better results when I plant 4 plants together, they seem to show better in the garden.
