I grow hollyhocks in LA also. I did it not knowing that they were difficult(?) to grow here. They grew tall and bloomed beautifully. The only problem I had was that I had to stake them like I do sunflowers because of our clay soil (fall over when it gets too wet or rainy). Yours look great! Cute kids too.

in our heat and humidity so I never tried. I'm
glad I didn't listen. They have grown beyond my
wildest expectations. They are on the favorites

Oh wow! Your hollyhocks are beautiful. My Mom is trying to grow them now. I hope she has 'your luck'. :) We live in zone 8b in east Tx.

I grew about 5 varieties of hollyhocks from seed in January indoors and some are almost knee high outside now. I feel in love with them last summer. Are any of you having problems with rust on the leaves yet? I have not had to get into a spraying program this year (and will probably regret that) but I would be interested in knowing what you use.

My doubles are starting to open now.

I have a hollyhock that comes back reliably every year, but it blooms in May and then it is done by the first week of June. It is in full sun and good soil. It has never reseeded! Impossible, but true. Rodger, I am going to email you and definitely take you up on the seeds. Most of the hollyhocks I find in garden centers are too frilly and fussy.
