Crepe Myrtle Roots in way of planting daylilies

We have a crepe myrtle in our front yard and we would like to plant some Stella d'Oro daylilies near it. Everytime we try to dig a hole we encounter a crepe myrtle root.

Will it harm the crepe myrtle if we chop through the root to make enough room to dig the holes for the daylilies?

It might depend on how many roots you chop through. At any rate, do it by hand, don't use a roto-tiller. That will do damage. I'd try to get them in between the roots, then let the day lillies propogate naturally and they should be able to co-exist.

I have a 10 year old Crepe Myrtle that was underplanted with Yupon Holly and Boxwood. When we bought the house we removed everything but the Crepe Myrtle. We replanted shrubs and perennials underneath. We hand dug the holes and did cut through some roots. This was over a year ago and the tree hasn't missed a beat. It grew vigorously last summer and is proving the same again this year. If you are careful I don't see why you wouldn't have the same success. Good Luck!!
