I have alocasias that are about 7 years old.

This spring I noticed that the main stalk of one of the plants was rotting, I was able to save & replant the top.

But am wondering what caused this.

Last week another one did the same thing. The stalk is still ok above and below rotted center.

We have afternoon showers, and area is well drained.

Full sun, mid state La.

any ideas?

I'm not sure that these are long lived perennials. Not all perennials are; some get woody and die out in the center and that is why dividing them is encouraged for certain types.

I think these are just getting old. Sounds like you did the right thing.
