Clipping Autumn Joy Sedum

I have three very nice Autumn Joy Sedum that I planted last year in a perennial bed. A large shrub has since begun to shade the bed and I'm worrying that the sedums will start to lie flat. A reference book that I was reading suggested a 1/3 trim. Has anyone had success with this? Is it too late to do now? I don't want to jepordize the fall blooms. I am planning to transplant them after they bloom. Any help will be great.
