| I have had good luck with tomatoes, peppers, spacemaster cucumbers and SOME luck with summer squash all in containers (plus basil, oregano, and rosemary) I love growing vegetables this way: just enough for table use right outside the back door. With the plants nearby, I keep a close watch on them and am able to give them better care, so they produce longer. I picked tomatoes last year for Thanksgiving dinner! I have had great luck with self watering containers, but also traditional containers. (I grew lettuce, carrots, and kale in window boxes last winter with great results.) If there's a "secret", it is absolutely, positively, daily watering (and I do mean alot of water, especially for tomatoes and cucumbers), and weekly liquid fertilizer (especially for the squash). I "mulch" the soil around the tomatoes with plastic to help hold in moisture. (These are also in the self watering containers.) If you want to learn more, I recommend "The Bountiful Container" by Nichols and Stuckey. It's all about veggies in containers, but it's the best book I have ever read on any kind of vegetable gardening. |
