Yellow of oleander tree

W bought 2 oleander trees from Lowes, one is doing great no yellowing (but no blooming). The other has over 50% of the leaves that are turning yellow, but also is getting several blooms on it. I think it has been over watered, but again we have been told to water MORE. What do you think?
Thanks

Only you can decide if the plants have been overwatered. Inspect the soil.

Yellowing can be caused by over OR under watering, so try to be a good plant detective about this. Does your soil drain reasonably well? Are you watering by hand or by an irrigatin system?

RE: Yellow of oleander tree

I bet it's UNDERwatering. Sometimes the plants sold in the big box stores are packed into very small pots and are extremely root bound. Depending on the soil, the root zone may be soooo dry and compacted that the water isn't really getting to it--merely running off. I have had this happen with my containerized orleaders and citrus trees just recently. The clincher was when I went out to inspect the soil of some large potted trees (citrus, queen palms, orleanders), I was stunned that the soils actually seemed bone dry despite the June monsoon of daily torrential rainfall! I ended by transplanting everything, chucking some of the old soil and adding better soil. I think the problem was using a mix that contained excessive peat moss--when peat dries out it can be difficult to rehydrate. I see a big difference already! Rhizo is right though, it may be OVER-watering. I would try to see what's happening at the soil layer (obviously this is easier if they're only containerized). P.S. I have come to appreciate the value of appropriate soils and the worthlessness of others. Good luck!
