Something chewed up my cast-iron plant

I just discovered a small Aspidistra (cast-iron)plant I had in the shade with all the leaves chewed off at the base and the roots gone! Would squirrels have done this? Why didn't they bother (for now) another Aspidistra about four feet away? I've never seen anything happen like this before. Any ideas?

More likely a vole or a groundhog. They seem to like roots more than leaves.
