growing pumpkins

is it too late to start for this year? if not, how do i grow them (we've never tried before)

You're probably about a month too late if you want pumpkins for Halloween. You might squeak in by Thanksgiving, if you choose the right varieties. Look for varieties with shorter maturing times. Pumpkins are grown very similarly to squash and melons. In good, fertile, well amended soil, make a mound (a hill). Plant 3 to 4 seeds on top of the hill. Keep moist until germination, usually in 7 to 10 days or so. The plants are BIG vines. Give them a good 3 to 5 feet RADIUS around the hill. Keep them weeded and well watered. That's about it.
