Need ideas on what to plan along front porch in LA

Hi, I'm in south Louisiana. Along the front of our house is a front porch that wraps around one side. We've planted enchore azaleas there with no luck. Then last summer I planted some oleander, and being young plants, they did not survive our extremely harsh (rare) winter we had which had several icing events and temps down in the teens.

So now we are debating what we should put in the area. I'm looking for any ideas. The area gets part sun/shade, probably more sun than shade. I would not say the area is well drained so it probably could fall under the moist soil category. I'm thinking possibly hibiscus, regular azaleas, or even lantana. Any input is appreciated and also when is the best time to plant, fall or spring?
