It will be leggy in 3 hrs. of sun. If you are not planting a dwarf, I'd go at least 6' from the house, probably farther. Even a smaller one should be 4' away- you want the mature plant 2' aaway from the house. Divide mature width in feet by 2, then add the 2' clearance.

Definitely a full-sun plant.

If you're planning to grow as a shrub, you'll surely want to use the dwarf form. If left unpruned, the full-size models can get 20'x20'...quickly with the right conditions! Of course, you could prune into tree form, which would allow you to plant closer to the house.

Be aware that this plant is a maintenance nightmare. They can easily outgrow your ability to prune them attactively, fall apart in ice storms, and sucker profusely. Our original landscaper planted six of the *%&$& things along with asiatic jasmine. Complete waste of a fair amount of money.
