Can Anyone Identify this bush with Apples on it?

I have found a bush growing on the side of my house with apples on it! small, yellow and really bitter, but they look like apples! And there are thorns on it too! Oddest thing i've ever seen. The apples are growing right onto the brance, with 1 inch stickers where you would normally see an apple stem, plus more stickers growing along each brance. I imagine a bird brought it from somewhere, but have no idea what it might be. Anyone ever hear of this? I have pics, but can't figure out how to post pics. thanks!

I would expect that it is a Hawthorn (Crataegus species), a member of the rose family. There are MANY types and very popular with wildlife.

Not sure if this is considered to be in the Hawthorn family or not, but quince also has small apple like fruit that is very bitter.

Or, it could be flowering quince, Chaenomeles japonica or C.speciosa.
