I absolutely agree with esh......Loropetalum.

they can get very large (tall and wide) depending on the cultivar. won't do well in shade. have interesting "stringy" flowers.

tcason, loropetalum is evergreen and will bloom twice a year, less so in late summer/early fall due to its usually having to be sheared again by July.
Indeed it will make a dense hedge but as jeff_al said, they do get wide.
Putting them too near a boundary line means you have to go into your neighbors prop. to trim it.
It needs regular shearing.
I have three as side yard foundation shrubs with only morning sun then totally shaded by the house and they do just fine. The trellised one will grow from its late winter shearing to 5' up to 8-9' by July when it is sheared again.

If you have a regular yard care crew to handle the twice a year maintainance to loropetalum, they make a nice privacy
screen. The burgundy form wants more regular sun but there are green forms which tolerate less hours of full sun.
Wouldn't recommend as an understory shrub.

tcason, this is not difficult to keep in nice shape. I leave mine looser, not clipped in a tight line. Loropettalum is a very satisfying plant. Mine rebloom sporadically over at least 8 - 9 months.
