Can anyone ID this beautiful shade plant

I recently visited the lovely Mary Livingston Ripley Garden in Washington, DC and I fell in love with this absolutely gorgeous burgundy colored shade (perhaps partial shade) plant. I took a photo thinking that I could read the tag when I got home, but unfortunately the tag seems to read "Irksome herbs"! Obviously my photo doesn't have enough resolution for me to be able to identify the plant tag:). Can anyone identify this plant for me? It doesn't appear to be any known variety of coleus that I've been able to find, so I think it must be some other type of plant but I don't have any other ideas.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
BTW, I also posted this request in the shade forum. |

Thank you, thank you, thank you, donnabaskets. I looked up iresine and it does look just like my photo. I can't wait to try it! (I also discovered that it's known as "Chicken Gizzard"... hilarious... LOL).

If you had ever cleaned enough chicken gizzard's you would understand. The color is a bit different, but the shape and basic color sure looks much like chicken gizzards only the gizzrds have more of a blue color. Thanks for all the information I always enjoy reading everyones comments.

According to Dave's Garden, Iresine is also called beefsteak plant and blood leaf.... such weird names for such a striking plant.

I have seen it for sale at Home Depot or Lowes the last two years and have wanted to try it but haven't yet. It is gorgeous and those other names for it are hilarious. I love the stories behind some plants. Judy

Judy, I lucked into iresine for sale at the Grower's Outlet for 10 cents each a couple of weeks ago. I've put some into the garden and also started rooting some cuttings to keep over winter. Thanks for the info about Lowe's and Home Depot. I don't know how I've missed seeing them there. Maybe it just took seeing a full grown plant in the actual garden for me to appreciate the plant.
