How to really, finally, totally kill an intrusive Wax Myrtle?

I had several Wax Myrtles planted in and amongst my azaleas, and the snow we got last year did them in. We sawed them down rather than digging them up, and now the sucker shoots are everywhere! How can I kill these things without killing my azaleas, too?

recut/hack the tops of the stump/s to expose 'working' cambium
then, a rag soaked in 'tree/stump killer' (or kerosine(sp?)) applied right to the 'stumps'
allow to 'soak in' a minute or two
