I asked this question on the Ga. Gardener Forum about Red Buckeye and got some good answers. I think the same directions would apply for the bottle brush buckeye.

I agree with birdannelady.
Several people in my area (I'm included) have planted red buckeye seeds. One key is to plant before the seeds dry out. Plant them as soon after harvest as possible.

Hi, I am new to the forum...While visting Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC, I found a large buckeye tree next to the Custus-Lee Mansion I picked up a few and tried to get them to sprout several times and different methods. All of the seed rotted without any sign of germination. I live in south GA. Can anyone offer suggestions as to what I might do?

jrj2, you may have gotten seeds of the Ohio buckeye tree. Not sure how well that will do in south GA. Try getting some seeds for red buckeye or bottle brush buckeye.

But for the original question, buckeye seeds germinate fine when planted in a pot and left out for the winter (protect them from squirrels with wire mesh). Don't bury the seed too deep, just about a 1/2 half into the soil.

Bottle brush buckeye also can be propagated by separating the suckers that grow from the base.
