| i have some olive trees that i got that are about 1- 1-1/2 years old. they are very skinny and stragely. i was wondering how much can i cut them back without killing the whole plant. i have never grown olives before and don't know anything about them. they are about 2 feet tall and only 1/4-3/8" in diameter now. they bend over just by the weight of themselves now. i cut one WAY back to see if it would survive but it seems to be stunted and not sure if i killed it. i cut another back a little bit and it sprouted 3 branches, which actually made it worse by being more top heavy. what should i do? any advise? thanks for any help. ccwood |

Do you possibly mean Sweet Olive? I have not heard of olive (the edibles) trees being grown in the southeast. If you mean sweet olives, you can prune them to increase bushiness, or to control height, etc. But this is probably not the best time of year to do so. Pruning stimulates fresh new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter cold comes and kills it. Some more info on what you are dealing with will help you get a good answer. |
