I need advice badly...

I've been haunting the home forums as we build our new house in southwest Tennessee. Now I know landscaping time is quickly approaching so I came in search of advice from the garden forum. I don't have much knowledge of plants/shrubs and I'm afraid the builder is about to ask me if I have any preferences about what I want the landscapers to do. I'm including a picture so you can get sort of an idea of the area to fill. It now has brick walls to define the beds but this picture was made before they were built. The bed is about 4-5 ft deep and goes completely across the front of the house, in front of the porch. It extends around the left side of the house to the walkway leading to the side door. On the other side of that walkway is a sort of triangular area that will also be mulched and landscaped. There are tons of trees in the back but none yet in the front. The house faces northeast. I need ideas for LOW growing shrubs across the front and then maybe some taller things for the ends and various shapes/sizes to wrap around the sides. The builder's wife said she likes foster holly for the ends. Is that a good choice? My only thoughts for the front are maybe some sort of small compact holly and dwarf nandenias. I had what I believe was spirea at my previous house and it was pretty. I also had a very low, wide growing white crepe myrtle with arching branches that was beautiful but I have no idea what it's called. Maybe a japanese red maple for the triangle? I'm out of my element here talking gardening. I would love some suggestion that I can look up on the net and then be ready when asked what I would like. Thanks for any help!
