organic gardening / sustainable living

Looking for organic gardening buddies in my region. I only know of one organic farm in the Memphis area. I find this very surprising since we have a large farmer's market.

Looking to connect with others interested in organic / sustainable living.

You'll need to know the difference between 'certified organic' and what it means to be 'organic' in your estimation. Professional growers who wish to grow AND SELL foods that can legally be labeled as organic must comply with specific standards and regulation. Mississippi (your state) lags waaaay behind in Certified Organic growers, at the present time.

Others, like some of those who may provide food for the farmer's market or just for their own table, decide what organic means to them. I think, that for most of us, it means focusing on fostering a healthy soil system and establishing a somewhat natural balance between the good critters and the pests. Some may be satisfied simply by avoiding the use of chemical pesticides, and I think that's fine, too. I expect that there are plenty of folks around you who subscribe to some form of 'organic' gardening.

Are you growing professionally?

I'm on the other end of Tennessee--East of Chattanooga--and it's a bit difficult to find organic gardeners/farms here too. Google Local Harvest, CSA for your area, organic farmers market, or check with your local UT Extension office and/or Memphis State ag dept. You should be able to find several choices and maybe a community garden group or a CSA that is looking for members/volunteers. You might check across the river and find some like minded people as well. I have a friend in Arkansas that is looking for an organic vineyard and has looked at several so there may be more interest there than on the TN side.
Good luck

I'll be looking into getting my organic certification soon. I plant to sell at the farmer's market. Thanks!
Take care

There is an organic, urban farm in Chattanooga very close to the Tow truck museum! You drive in behind, in the housing development and it's right back in there. Been there for a very very long time.

I am an organic gardener (not commercial), but I'm in Middle Tennessee... so I'm a little bit away from you.

I have not visited their operation, but Delvin Farm is a large commercial organic grower in this area; might be worth a visit if you're over this way.
