Sorry it took so long for someone to reply to you. I, myself, always get my canes in the ground by the first of April or so. I am near Shreveport, La. if that helps get an idea of my latitude. After a few weeks, it really takes off. I use any old type of balanced (cheap) fertilizer such as 13-13-13. It is a heavy feeder. You can also use a lawn fertilizer providing it is not a weed and feed formula. I grow the old heirloom variety called "Louisiana Purple" due to the fact that it is quite hardy and much better looking than the commercial forms I see growing. Canes are very thick and stout and of course, deep purple.

Anyway, it is easy to grow and looks kind of cool. After the first light frost, I usually cut down all the cane and what I do not give away, I burry about 8 inches deep in the garden in 3 ft. sections (I just pile a bunch of cane in the hole). I do this to insure that incase there were ever a horrible winter and my main plants are killed out, I have plenty of back up. Canes come out of the ground in perfect condition, ready to plant.

I think spring planting is a much better idea than fall planting in areas that are not tropical. I would want my plants well established prior to the onset of winter.

Hi! I live in zone 7 Texas and would love to add a little sugar cane to my collection of plants in my garden just to tinker with. I have never grown sugar cane but have wanted to for some time now. I grow mostly vegetables and just want to try my hand at sugar cane. If you have some for sale let me know how much you want and I will gladly pay for some.

Where is your location ?? AND do you have any fig trees

I am in Kaufman, Tx. and no, unfortunately I have no fig trees that have survived. Used to, but I had a really hard time keeping the fire ants out of them and they killed them.
