Orange Felt vs Orange Rust on Blackberries

For the last couple of years, I've noticed an increasing amount of orange blotches appearing on my thornless blackberry canes. Initially, I thought it was Orange Rust, but when I would research Orange Rust on the Internet, the description and pictures I would find didn't match what I was seeing. However, yesterday I found the below reference to a disease called Orange Felt, sometimes referred to as Orange Cane Blotch, which is exactly what I've been seeing. The good news is it's relatively harmless with regards to fruit production and it's controllable, unlike Orange Rust in both cases. I just wanted to pass along to my fellow southern berry farmers what I've found since Orange Felt is especially prevalent on blackberries grown in very hot, wet, and humid environments, such as those
encountered in much of the Coastal Plain areas of the Southeast.

Hope this helps,

Hope this eventually helps someone, but I'm tired of seeing it at the top of the list.

I meant to thank you for this long ago, Ken.

RE: Orange Felt vs Orange Rust on Blackberries

Just wanted to post a follow-up to my original posting from last year. This year I have seen no evidence of Orange Felt (algae) on my Ouachita primocanes that I was seeing the previous 2 years. In addition, I have seen no loss in florocane production or primocane growth. So if anyone who is encountering the Orange Felt symptoms is told to remove the infected canes as the algae will spread throughout your patch, I highly recommend monitoring your patch rather than pulling your plants out as it appears the algae growth is only superficial. In my case, I think it was the wet weather we experienced the previous two summers that caused the right conditions for the Orange Felt to appear. This summer, on the contrary, has been a very dry one. Just thought I'd pass this observation along.
