Verbenas are members of the Four O'Clock family. Like Four O'clocks, they are very fragrant and yet they have no petals. Their sepals look very much like petals. Polinators are attracted to them. I have noticed, to my delight, that hummingbird moths are especially fond of them.

I have a purple Trailing Verbena. It started out as a red plant, but then reverted back to the blue-violet 'species' from its seed. I still love it. It is very pretty and smells really nice.

We have a wild Sand Verbena here in Oklahoma that is a ground cover type. It is not only beautiful, but smells so sweet. Blooms in the spring.

The only other Sand Verbena I have ever seen is the wild kind at the beach in California, where I grew up. It was VERY fragrant. It grew in the yellow sand on the banks amongst the tall grasses. So pretty.

They like sandy soils and good drainage. Excellent for rock gardens. Can be grown in containers and window boxes.
