Farmer's Almanac

Hello all,

I recently purchased Mel B's book, and my husband and I have decided to plant an SFG (okay, I decided we were going to do an SFG, but he's playing along nicely and providing the labor). We both used to help his grandfather in his garden each year, but SFG is quite different from those experiences. Hubby's grandfather always bought a Farmer's Almanac each year and used it as a guide for planting. I have considered purchasing one as well, but I wanted to find out if it's a worthwhile investment or mostly wive's tales?

No need to purchase it...their website has planting dates on it already.

My dad buys one every year without fail and he's a fantastic gardener. I'm not sure what wives tales are in it, but there is a really nice planting month by month chart as well as some great articles about anything you can imagine in stars and gardening. I suppose there weather charts are historically based, but in December, I went to weather.com daily and they didn't get it right in my area one single time, so I suspect historical data is as good as anything modern science has to offer at this time. You can go to almanac.com if you want to peruse and see if it's something you might use.

Mother in law got one this year.

I was disappointed in their denialist stance on man-made climate change and some of their advice is a little dated, but overall I thought it was still a good reference and the charts are still handy to have as reminders. But nothing is in there that you can't get for free on the Internets or here.
