I have seen one on someone's blog??? Annie something??? but they used vinyl floor tiles. I think, and drilled holes throw at for each spacing, I thought it was genius, simple and cheepish, I suppose if money is an issue cardboard would work in the short term :-)

Yes, I have seen the same thing somewhere. Somebody's dad made several templates, depending on the seed spacing. I know I don't quite get the spacing right in my squares just using my fingers. You might check Mel's site. I know I saw professional ones somewhere.

I have some on my blog. We've made them for several people and would be happy to make them for you too. There's a 16 hole and a 9 hole one that come together in a set. You can see them on the right hand side of the page as you scroll down.

Here is a link that might be useful: Seed Spacing Templates

RE: Seed spacing Jig

I love the idea of a spacing jig. I'm wondering, though, if it would be even better to drill out small (say, 1/4") holes, countersunk in little "basins." That way the seeds (especially small ones) could get "pushed" into the hole and be in exactly the right spot. It would also allow a single jig, color-coded, to serve all densities of plantings, although a set of different ones would probably be better. I'll throw one together and post a pic.

My 11 year old son, who's nuts for gardening, is mildly autistic and has really iffy fine motor skills. If I give him a line and some carrot seeds, the neighbor will have carrots three doors down!

Just wanted to say thanks to Ribbit! I got my templates so fast we were BOTH surprised -- and they're perfect. Now if it would stop raining long enough for me to use them...

Glad you liked them! I'm excited about using mine this year.
