Protect my seedling from snow

I'm in NW AR and we have snow predicted to come on Saturday. So far I've planted spinach , lettuce, beets, onions, peas , radishes, carrots, and strawberry's. So far the lettuce, spinach, beets, peas, and onions are showing above the mix. I was thinking I would use an old tarp with a silver side to cover the boxes and try to protect them. Would this smother the plants? Would this protect them enough? When should I put the tarp on them, just before the weather freezes or several hours before, the day before? As you can guess this is my first garden and I have no clue what to do. Oh and just so you know we are having thunderstorms from now till it snows on Saturday afternoon. I think the water will do the plants good.
