Measuring peat - compressed or expanded volume?

Hi everyone,

I'm a relatively new gardener (I've got about five seasons in) and this year I want to try to use SFG. I'm aiming to do it pretty near Mel's method before adapting things to my area.

For the beds that I want to make, I've figured I'll need 39 cubic feet of "Mel's Mix." Depending on whether I go 33%/33%/33% or 25%/25%/50%, I'll need 9.75 to 13 cubic feet of peat moss. My question is, knowing that the bales come in 3.8 COMPRESSED cubic feet, would I need to calculate based on the compressed volume or the expanded volume? Would I need three to four bales, or two to three bales? I cannot find an answer for this anywhere!

Thanks!
