Repotting Onion Seedlings

I used a flat to start my onion seedlings. The flat is very shallow (about 3 inches; you know, the flats with 72 small individual sections). I was wondering if 1) I need to transplant them to another pot at all before I put them in the ground in May; should I put them in in May, or before; I live in Southern Ohio), and if I do, 2) when I should transplant my onions to bigger pots?

I am new at this and would appreciate any suggestions!

I started mine in a flat too and I'm not going to transplant them before I put them out. What zone are you in? I'm in zone 5 here in southern NY and I am going to plant mine out on April first.

Thanks for the response. I'm in zone 6a. So, a frost won't hurt the onion seedlings? If not, I'll plant mine out now too! Thanks again.

frost shouldnt hurt them if you harden them off properly. Here's a great website to check out:
