Conduit trellis hint

I recently constructed my first SFG trellis according to the directions in the book - sort of. I used 4 foot rebar ( which I pounded in about 2 feet) because the soil by my box is a little soft. When I pressed down on the top of the trellis to see how strong it was, I noticed it sunk into the ground a little. Gravel around the rebar helped, but I wanted to be sure the trellis would stay up where I wanted it.

The solution was to put a 1/2" metal washer over each piece of rebar. They prevent the conduit from sinking into the ground.

I am new to this forum and hope this isn't old news.

Great idea. Actually not all that many here use Mel's trellis, so those that want to do so will benefit from this trick. Thanks and welcome!

Thank You!!! I'm also making my first this year, and plan to do the same thing, and was wondering how to keep the trellis from sinking down more than I want it to!!

Well, it's new news to me - thank you! We just bought the last of our trellis supplies (using Mel's design) today and will start putting them together soon, so I appreciate the tip.

Well, I guess I missed the previous post on this and was noticing the same problem with the conduit sinking. I was considering the washers myself and now that I have confirmation that it works, I'll definitely pick some up.

I used 1x2 and 2x2 screwed the bed frames, no sinking and very cheap. I knew rebar would sink in all but the very hardest of soils, esp. when it rains.
