Hi TexEagle - I'm new to this but having manually removed all the Bermuda from my front yard, I know it is a beast. The trick is sorting out all the rhizomes - they are white nodes on the horizontal running roots about 6 inches or so underground. (I got pretty good at recognizing them after may hours ha!) Inevitably you will miss some, but the new shoots are pretty easy to pull when they do come up, once they're detached from the Mothership underground.

I'd say it's partly a matter of budget - how much do you really want to save the soil? I think it can be done but you will be pulling weeds later in the season. But maybe worth it?

(I am using native soil in my SFG gasp! I know I know...but I had a lot of good loamy dirt, and was willing to deal with weeds....but it's unorthodox...)

The thing about weeds is that when you actively are removing them and watching a certain spot, you can do a decent job at keeping it under control, especially if they are the type you can pull easily. Some people with small property lots having weed problems is because they haven't really done much -- not even hand pulling or hoeing, before they want to use chemicals. (I don't include the people with large lots or huge land properties in this group)

In this case, now that you're back, and within your limited space of raised bed, I think you would be fine to amend and use that area again. You can also take the chance to lift up all the soil, and at least get rid of the big and obvious weed roots or plants, and throw it back in with some additional amendments. Then keep an eye on it as this season continues.

Doing that, you would have at least pulled out many early spring to late fall weeds that would have been popping up, or that have been having a great party in your awesome bed soil without you there.
