Mulch questions

Hi folks - I'm making the jump from perennials and a few tomato plants and raspberry bushes to having a small (4 - 4X4 boxes) SFG.

I know the answer I see most often about mulching is "just do it - newspaper, hay, mulch, leaves, whatever, just do it!" But I have questions anyway! Specifically, I have about 3 bags of MR compost my mom had left over from something she did. Would this be good to use as mulch in my garden beds? The people at the garden store swear by it, but other comments I've read worry that a lot of its nutrients have already been depleted, that it will raise pH levels, or that it can have chemicals in it. My soil is Mel's mix, and the compost in that is mostly composted manures from different retail places, some home made compost, and some MR compost.

I'll have all the normal popular plants - carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, peas, a couple winter squash and a couple melons.

Thanks!
