Do I have to use vermiculite to plant my seeds in the garden?

I have made my 4x4 squares using the 1/3 compost, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 peat moss mixture. I'm out of vermiculite and really don't want to spend the money to buy another bag. Is it really necessary to use vermiculite when planting my vegetable seeds in the garden, i.e., making a whole for the seed filling the hole partially with vermiculite, putting in the seed, and then covering it more vermiculite?

I don't remember reading anything like that. But I sort of skimmed as I read the book. I just stick the seed into a hole that I poke with my finger and push the dirt back over it....

No, you don't. It's just easier for the seeds to sprout if you do. If you have any seed-starting mix, that'll work fine, too. But so will just sticking them in the ground...

I use Mel's Mix all the time for seed starting and have been lucky so far. You could also get some soil-less potting mix at the store.
