use both sides of trellis?

Has anyone tried to use both sides of a trellis for vining vegetables? I know that the vining would really become inter-twined,and the available sunshine to both sides would be an issue - but, it's something to think about....

RE: use both sides of trellis?

I plant beans on both sides of my fence. I plant them thick and don't thin them. I find that they like to be close and the more leaves to shade the fruit, the happier they are.

However, when trying to grow beans on one side and cukes or cantalope on the other, I found that the beans won. Not that the cukes or melons failed completely or died, only that they were pushed out and the vines that sprawled faired better than those that tried to climb.

That is my experience. Haven't tried winter squash or other mellons. Maybe others have had better luck. Kay.

I believe the SFG method is to put the trellis in the middle of the SF and plant the square on both sides of it. At least that's what I did with my peas, cukes and will do with my pole beans.

I plan on planting "like" vegetables together-using four seperate trellises. They are cukes, tomatoes, sugar baby watermelons, and cantaloupes.I've monitored the direction and length of sun exposure to each trellis, and one side of each trellis will probably get at least 6 hrs of sun-and the other about 4.I think it will be ok,but this summer will definitely be interesting. Thanks sin and kay

I have two trellises on my garden, one on the north side and one in the middle. I am trying on the middle one tomatoes on one side and sugar snap peas(they will die soon due to the heat) and cucumbers and a small grape tomato on the other. It's getting pretty crowded around the tomato and the 4 pea vines I planted but that won't be a problem soon. Next year I may put up another trellis on the other end just for the peas, my daughter loves them so much.

I use both sides of my trellises. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I run mine north and south rather than east and west. More sun exposure, I think.
