i am putting a 5 foot barrier around SFG because garden is in field next to lawn. i am putting either landscape fabric,or black plastic down and covering it with small rock. which material would be better to keep weeds down, or does it matter? thx

I would use plastic, because it's probably cheaper - and should last longer.

Plastic works great, its cheap and lasts a long time. Over the plastic I just put down bark, and its worked like a charm for 9 years now. I was considering small stones, but, I thought it might hurt to walk on-I walk on it with stocking feet all the time...
