They'll root like tomatoes but not as well. Just plant as is and use a smaller cage, as they'll sprawl if you don't. They'll take up more than one square.

Would you recommend 2 by 2 squares or maybe just 1.5 by 1.5 squares?

We planted Tomatillos 2 years ago, One per square and had no problems. They were great and took off right away. We had quite a bountiful harvest, and they were not much work. My experience is that the tomatillos were fine in the 1 x 1 square.

The regular green tomatillos should be fine in 1 x 1, especially if you cage it. If you are planting the yellow ones, you probably need a 2 x 2, those tend to grow out more than up.

Mine in Denver-area heat take ~18 in and if you crowd them the critters come. I've always grown in containers and in ground much more productive and larger plants.

Over the weekend I planted three (out of six) tomatillos in 2x2 foot squares. I am pretty sure that they are the green variety. I'll have to plant the other three in 1 foot squares. Then I'll know for next year at least. I really want to can a big batch of salsa verde this fall!

You'll have to be extra vigilant as that is too close.
