Garlic, I am told, is 4 or 9 per square. Shallots, (which are like onions, aren' they?) I believe would be at least 9 per square. That would be my guess. This is my first year with the square foot method, too. I found a link that is a good plant spacing guide, but doesn't mention shallots.

Personally, I'd go 16 - shallots will go a lot smaller than onions or garlic, and you can always thin them into salad trimmings down to 9 if they start getting crowded. I plant my spring onions/salad onions to 16's and thin as required.
