Use what you can get. Course is just preferred. Your plants will be fine. Good luck!

If the vermiculite would kill your plants, your friend wouldn't be using it to make potting soil! ;-)

The vermiculite is all the same, the only difference is the size of the particles.

The coarse vermiculite is better for aeration and moisture retention (larger particle with larger "holes" for holding moisture and allows for greater gaps in the soil structure for air to reach the roots.

If you have the fine vermiculite, it will work, but it won't provide the level of moisture retention and aeration that the coarse would. BUT, it is certainly better than none at all!

I used the fine vermiculite in my garden b/c that was all I could afford/find.

My garden is doing well and is the talk of the neighborhood. I have lettuce, green beans, peas, and a host of other veggies.
