REALLY? can you trellis summer squash

I have planted some yellow crookneck and pattypan.... I have them in the middle of a 2 square area... right under the trellis, but the "bush" iness of them is SOOOO aparent. I know Mel says you can... but they aren't throwing up anything long enough yet to even try and train/tie to the trellis....

I have options to let them have 4 squares apiece, and am not REALLY opposed to doing it... i would LIKE to trellis them, but it is looking like a real pain and maybe not so effective.... can anyone tell me the trick to this?

is it better to just not fight it and let them bush? it isnt ideal, as I took up trellis spots with them.... but live and learn... they were starts, I put them in around 2 weeks ago... do you think I Could transplant them now? to the middle squares of my 3 foot deep box so I could do more beans in the back? or am I stuck for this year?
