do you fertilize onions grown in you sfg?

Wondering what success other's have had in growing onions in a sfg, specifically do you find that you need to fertilize your onions, and if so with what and how ofter?

My sfg mix is a "modified mel's mix"... 25% vermiculite, 25% peat, and 50% compost (which is 50% purchased and 50% home-made).

Your replies/info/experience is appreciated!

I'm not organic with fertilizer, so I mix a balanced in to my beds at the beginning of each season and hit them once a month or so with a waterbased fertilizer (I think I've been using pennington)
