Can I get away with little vermiculite?

Hi,

I made soil mix, vermiculite: peat moss: mushroom compost = 10:45:45, only because my vermiculite bag was so small. It could be less than 10%. I couldn't find a bigger one in the store. Would you say it really helps to have more vermiculite? Thanks so much.

It really helps to drain and retain water with more vermiculite, but no it is not necessary. Folks do quite well with straight compost. You can mix in more later if you wish. Good luck!
