Squash blooms- male versus female

organic_veronica

Hi all,

Im new to gardening, and have read here and there about squash varieties having separate male and female blooms for pollenation... I have several small blooms on my squash plant, but they are all closed up... How can I tell if they are male of female? I also read blooms only open up once. Does anyone know how long it takes a bloom to open up? I bought and transplanted my plants a week ago, so I'm wondering when can I expect to see the blooms open up. And am I really supposed to keep tabs on my male to female blooms ratio on a daily basis (if they really only open up once)?
