Trellis corners

I'm starting to plan out my SFG for the fall, as I try to improve my hodgepodge 'starter' raised bed with a little more forethought. And with a real trellis or three - particularly since the previous owner of my house left a half-dozen lengths of 1/2" EMT conduit up in the loft.

I know this is not a new topic, but I'm trying to figure out the best way of handling the corners. I don't own a conduit bender, and don't know that I'm up to accurately doing back-to-back 90 degree bends if I were. The elbow connectors I've seen are fairly expensive.

My father-in-law suggested a kludge that might work. I would take the relatively cheap straight connector and replace the screw tightener with a longer screw. The crosspiece would rest on that screw, and I could fasten it securely with wiring.

Any thoughts on whether that would work? Or has anyone located a relatively inexpensive source of elbow connectors for EMT conduit?
