If you are going to do all that, why not drill holes through the ends of the emc and run bolts completely through the emc and wire that together. that would hold. If it was me I would bite the bullet and buy the elbows, or as Dan says get it bent. It is only a one time expense not an ongoing cost. If you bend it you will need some straight connectors for extending the conduit.

The straight connectors IIRC come in a pack of 5 at your BigBox for about the same cost as one 90º elbow. Surely ACE or some place with service will bend them for you esp if you purchase the straight connectors as well. With straights you can do fun shapes as well, this is all painted now in 7 y.o. girl colors, note the connectors ~1/2 way up:

I found $.50 elbows in the plumbing dept at Lowes. They are pvc and my husband drilled holes and screwed them on. This is my second year and they appear to be holding up well.

I appreciate the suggestions. I've thought about having someone with appropriate skills do the bending for me, but I'll have to ask around at the local hardware store. Using a PVC elbow isn't a bad idea either, for the minor inconvenience of drilling a few holes.

Use UV-resistant PVC. The typical elbows to connect SCH40 pipe is not.
