Square Foot Gardening

spinach and chard doesnt get big in my sfg

I am SFG for the second year and both this year and last I planted both spinach and chard and I just can't get either of them to grow big they just stay small and stunted. I have a mix of vermiculite compost and peat moss as instructed. They are in full sun, the spinach bolts quick but the chard last all summer. They are in a 6 inch depth box. Am I doing something wrong?!

Could it be your climate? I have the opposite problem in zone 9. My chard grows so big and fast I can't keep up with it and it becomes a hiding place for snails. Is your raised bed on top of soil or something else?
