questions about constructing the square foot boxes....

I understand the basic concept behind square foot gardening. You use a 4' x 4' box, and that boxes is divided into sixteen

1' x 1' squares. What and how many plants you can grow in each square depends upon what you're growing and how big it is.

What I don't understand is the construction of the boxes themselves. I need basic instructions on how to build the boxes.

First off does the box have a bottom? I realize the top part is divided into sixteen 4' x 4' squares, but it doesn't specify whether you just use this as a frame to plant your stuff, then fill the boxes with soil, or if there is an actual bottom to the box.

My 2nd question is how do you put the grids themselves in? I know that one 4' x 4' box is divided up into sixteen squares; each "row" would have 4 squares. What size lumber would you need to make each grid for each of the rows for one 4' x 4' box? How would you actually put the pieces of wood into the box to make the grids?
