Supporting Bush Beans with soil

Posted by computergardener z7 NC (My Page) on

My Bush beans are coming along nicely but there is a solid 4-5 inches between the soil and the first set of leaves. Can I push compost/top soil around the stem to support the plant. I do this with tomatoes, basil, corn stalks and it works great.

Will this work with Bush beans.

Thanks in Advance....

No. They shouldn't need support. Most plants do not care for piling soil around their stems.

I remember as a boy, my grandfather would cultivate and throw the soil "around" the plants. He always had handfuls of beans per plant up to a few years ago. IMHO either would work, but why do the extra work for a few plants, not 200' rows....Dan

I use those knee-high wire fence sections to keep my bush beans contained inside the garden and away from the central path. Cheap and work great for bush bean control floppiness!

how 'bout using stakes on the corners, and using natural twine, wrapped around aprox 4" high...Dan

Funny, I came here today to find information about supporting bush beans, and here is this post!

My first year growing bush beans, and I'm frustrated with the "floppiness". The plants are doing wonderfully, but they are all flopped over. Many of the beans lay on the soil. I find it frustrating. Is this floppiness normal? Do people do anything about it, or just let them be? Also, I find that the beans taste aweful if left on the vine too long. Again.......normal?
